Our Sustainability Commitment

At Fern Toronto, we believe beautiful flowers shouldn’t come at the expense of the environment.

As a Toronto florist, we recognize the importance of caring for the natural world that grows the flowers we work with every day. The floral industry, like many industries, has traditionally relied on materials and practices that create unnecessary waste. We believe there is a better way. Inspired by the idea to think globally and act locally, we aim to make thoughtful choices that reduce environmental impact while still creating beautiful, meaningful floral designs.

Sustainability is an ongoing journey and we are committed to continually learning and improving our practices.

Foam-Free Floral Design

In January 2024, Fern Toronto became a 100% floral foam-free studio.

Floral foam is a single-use plastic commonly used in the floral industry that breaks down into microplastics and cannot be recycled. Instead, we design our arrangements using reusable and low-impact mechanics such as chicken wire, floral frogs (kenzans) and tape grids.

These methods allow us to create natural, garden-inspired designs while significantly reducing environmental waste while offering sustainable flower arrangements in Toronto.

Locally Grown & Seasonal Flowers

Whenever possible, we prioritize locally grown flowers from Ontario farms.

Working with local growers supports our regional flower farming community, reduces transportation impact and celebrates the beauty of flowers in their natural seasons. From spring tulips and peonies to summer dahlias and autumn textures, seasonal flowers bring a special sense of time and place to our designs.

We also love sharing the stories behind the flowers we use and often tell customers about the growers and regions where their blooms were cultivated.

Thoughtful Sourcing

Not all flowers can be grown locally year-round, especially in Canada’s climate. When sourcing flowers from outside our region, we aim to purchase through trusted wholesalers who prioritize responsible growing and supply practices.

Our goal is always to balance beauty, quality and environmental awareness in the flowers we choose for our Toronto flower studio and local delivery customers.

Low-Waste Packaging

We are continually working to reduce waste in our packaging and delivery practices.

Fresh bouquets are carefully wrapped using recyclable materials and include a sustainable hydration method using a wet paper towel secured inside a compostable bag. This provides short-term water for transport without relying on single-use plastic water packs.

Small changes like these help reduce unnecessary waste while ensuring flowers arrive fresh and beautiful.

Always Learning

Sustainability is not a fixed destination. It is an ongoing process of learning, adapting and improving.

Flowers connect us to nature in moments of celebration, remembrance and everyday life. Caring for the environment that makes those moments possible is an important part of the work we do.

We see a lot of unnecessary waste in the world and we believe there are better ways to do things. Through thoughtful choices and small local actions, we hope to contribute to a more sustainable future for our industry and our community.
